Thread initiated by tab on 8/5/02.

last year was my first poppy mtn. festival, great music but the 4wheelers ruined what could have been a great festival. most of the people camped on the ridge where we were never even went to the stage. they spent all day and all night riding and stiring dust.maybe insted of calling it poppy mtn. bluegrass festival you could call it poppy mtn. 4wheller ralley featuring bluegrass music. not so happy poppy!!!!

MAYBE THEY SHOULD USE A LITTLE OIL ON THE ROADS TO HELP. IM SURE THEY TAKE IN ENOUGH MONEY.

I totally agree with Tab. As I said in another thread line, we loved the music and I even talked to Marty about these problems. He seems like a great guy but those ATVs are just too much!! Maybe they should have two separate festivals. I'd sure be happy (POPPY) to attend the music only one .

I have not missed Poppy Mountain since the 2nd year. Every year we have complained about the dust (Except when the monsoons have set in!). Marty told me last year that he was going to really work on the dust problem this year...I hope he does. The festival is the greatest, but somethnig needs to be done about the 4 wheelers and the DUST. Come on Marty!!!!!!!!!!!

by Bill

Marty has purchased a water truck to keep the dust down to a min......

The ATVers do stir some dust..... I would suggest camping on one of the other many ridges where there are not so many ATVs.......

We have added about 20-30 more acres of flat camping this year with more bath/shower houses as well as more restrooms.....

No other festival in the world can claim to have what Marty claims to have though...... Where else can ya have all the fun and different activities that one has here?

Every festival has it's problems..... And they (we) all work them out..... For some reason though we became the Largest Traditional Bluegrass Festival in the world.....in just 6 years of operation........ now our 10th show, we still sit on top!

Thanks to all who have been here and enjoyed it to make it this big......
just remember the biggr ya are, the more problems one can encounter.... and for the amount of guests we have.... there really are very FEW problems.....

as for the dust..... the 23 festivals I've attended this year, with the exception of the rainy ones..... I left each one with "souvenier" dust!.....

Besides that we help the variouse groups in town with thier car washes after the festival...... The school groups from the HS made about$1000 from thier particular car wash last year and are greatful for it!

HEHE.......
See ya'll on the Mountain starting 31 August for the Poppy MNountain Round-Up this year!

I RIDE AN ATV ON POPPY BUT I TRY NOT STIR UP MUCH DUST- I THINK THE ATV SHOULD STAY MORE TO THE BACK SIDE OF POPPY MTN

The 4wheelers a all around dust and safety hazzard.
I hope they are banned before a serious accident happens. Most people attending festival have same opinion.
See you all August31

If it wasn't for his 4-wheeler, my husband could not go to these type festivals. He can not walk very far-because of medical problems. Everyone that we met last year was very courtious with their 4-wheelers. The dust does not come from only the 4-wheelers, but from the many cars, etc. that traverse the roads and paths. Would you do away with the old cars too and then have to walk to where you were going? There are always a few who try to ruin it for everyone by not being courtious, but with this many people, I think that this is one GREAT festival !!! Thanks Poppy Tim

I have to admit there is alot of dust but I can deal with it. That's part of the fun at Poppy Mtn! Maybe the water truck will help. I don't know how you could see everything and everybody without some kind of wheels and they all make dust. I can't wait to get a breath of fresh Poppy dust. See ya'll soon!

I have gone to many bluegrass festivals in many different states over the past 12 years, and I have to say that Poppy Mountain has become one of the biggest and best in the Eastern US. I have been coming to Poppy Mountain since my son (now 11) was a very young toddler; we have seen the attendance grow from a couple hundred to tens of thousands. I am so proud that I was there in the beginning and that I have been back many times since. Marty, Tim, Chris and the others who give so much of their time deserve all of our thanks and our cooperation to make the festival the best in the country. I'll eat a little dust to see so many of today's best bluegrass musicians enjoying themselves all in one place. What a great entertainment value! Better than Disney World? You bet!!!!!!

as for the comments on the a.t.v's...a serious accident did occur last year..if i am not mistaken did'nt a young man die as a result of an a.t.v accident?? these are dangerous..and most who ride them are severly intoxciated..if you need transportation due to a health related problem..golf carts sevre a much better purpose..and go much slower...

by p.m.m

by the way..we have been holding festivals in the u.s.a for many, many moons at much larger sites than poppy mountain..and have managed to survive just fine w/o a.t.v's...i noticed a lot of beers bellies and "wide loads" that need some ol' fashioned exercise..myself included!!! hahaha!! let's walk a little more and ride a little less!! happy poppy y'all

There's no way you could control the dust completely at a festival this size. I think we are missing the focus here. Instead of focusing on ATVs, we should be focusing on the speed at which atvs are allowed to travel. I wouldn't enjoy the festival near as much if I couldn't ride around and visit with friends on different parts of the mountain. The 4-wheelers are no different than the golf carts if the speed of both vehicles are monitored. Actually, that brings up another point....why is it that we let golf carts onto the black top areas but not 4-wheelers. There's no difference. Again, it's the speed that needs monitored-not the vehicle. I for one-love poppy mountain and will be back every year. Marty, Tim and everyone who puts this festival on - A BIG THANK YOU for providing an awesome place for me and my family to come to every year. We love it!
